Hinton was from Chicago, Illinois. He attended the University of Kansas from 1900 to 1902 and then transferred Harvard University. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1912 and taught bacteriology and immunology there from 1921 to 1946, during this time (1936), he wrote and published Syphilis and Its Treatment. He was promoted to clinical professor in 1949, the first Black man to hold such a position. Hinton was known world wide for his development of a flocculation method for the detection of syphilis called the “Hinton Test.” He died in 1959.
